Fly Strap
A livestock backrub, by SEQ Products

Cattle treat themselves as they walk past

Fly Strap hangs at a gate, laneway, water point or under a tree. The 21 L reservoir feeds a set of straps, and every animal that brushes through applies its own dose of insecticide or deodorant — no yarding, no gun, no extra round of work.

How it works

Three parts, and the cattle do the last one themselves.

i.

Hang it

Rope is provided to hang it up across a laneway, gate or yard entrance — anywhere the mob already passes on their own.

ii.

Fill the reservoir

Load the 21 L reservoir with your backrub oil. Careful — it now will weigh approx 25kg. Insecticide or deodorant treatment, and the flow rate is set to suit. You can adjust this by turning it only 1/8 of a turn clockwise to allow more flow, or only 1/8 of a turn anti-clockwise to reduce the rate. This measurement of the gap will be 6–8mm, with 7mm giving a drip rate of approximately 1 drip per strap per 45 seconds. As the oil flows along the strap, it can take up to 24 hours to see the flow difference.

iii.

Let the mob walk through

Livestock walk through the straps on the way to water, paddock or with a small bit of training they will pass under it themselves in the paddock. Backs and sides get treated well with our 50mm wide straps, and with our shortened central straps giving better coating to the animals head and shoulders every pass.

Treatment without the mustering

Built for buffalo fly and insect control on properties with livestock. Can be used with cattle, horses and other livestock. With time livestock know the benefits and use it to self treat.

No yarding required

The backrub sits on a route the herd already takes, so treatment happens as part of a normal day.

Controls buffalo fly and other insects

Straps apply insecticide and deodorant directly to the hide, giving effective, ongoing coverage rather than a single point-in-time dose. Livestock can be trained to self dose. Using organic treatments in the oils can provide no withholding period and is ideal for dairy cattle as it will not contaminate the milk or upset the breeding cycle of the dung beetle.

21 L reservoir, adjustable flow

A large reservoir keeps the unit running for up to 6–8 weeks between refills, and the flow rate is adjustable 1/8 of a turn either way to suit your treatment and herd traffic. The straps are releasable so there is low risk using it to the herd.

UV-stabilised straps, bright colours available

Straps are made from UV-stabilised material built for our conditions, and available in white, green, yellow, pink, maroon and more coming. Please ask!!

Where to hang it

Anywhere cattle already pass through on their own.

Water point gateway

Daily watering means daily contact, with no extra handling required through summer.

Laneway between paddocks

Set it on a rotation gate and every mob picks up treatment as part of the shift.

Yard entry point

Catch stock on the way in or out of the yards without adding a step to the day's work.

What to use in it

A couple of options we recommend, depending on what you're after.

Organica Cattle Coat

Our pick for an organic deodorant option. It deodorises the odours that attract flies and biting insects to cattle and livestock, helping reduce three-day sickness and limit the stress and irritation caused by fly, mosquito and lice bites. It carries Certified Allowed Farm Input approval (No. 442), is USDA NOP compliant, ready to use, and made with Australian essential oils and botanical extracts — eco-friendly and non-toxic. It has no withholding period and is ideal for dairy cattle, as it won't contaminate the milk or upset the dung beetle's breeding cycle.

ProLube Backrub Oil

We also recommend ProLube Backrub Oil as a carrier for your own oil-soluble deodorant or insecticide. There are several options out there, and we're happy to talk through what would suit your setup.
